By 2050, the world population will reach 9 billion people. One of the biggest challenges for the future will be finding the right technical innovations to increase the productivity of the food industry to match the exponentially growing demand. This is especially true in the Middle East and North Africa Region (MENA), where the population is growing at a fast pace and produce is scarce because of the arid climate.
The Global Forum for Innovations in Agriculture in Abu Dhabi presented the latest technologies applied to the business to regional food producers and has been home to discussions on the best way to answer the challenge of food supplies in the years to come.
Technology to Feed the Planet
Since its start in 2014, the GFIA welcomed more than 20,000 visitors from all over the world and collaborated with over 50 prominent partners in the industry. This year the Forum was organized under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, and in collaboration with the Abu Dhabi Agriculture and Food Safety Authority.
The Forum explored Industry 4.0 innovations that can be beneficial to the regional stakeholders. Technological innovations are the only way to increase productivity in difficult climates and achieve sustainability in the long term.
This year, the forum presented food technologies to regional producers across six key areas:
-
Indoor farming and hydroponics;
-
Date palm production;
-
Aquatech;
-
Livestock and animal health;
-
Smart honey production;
-
Sustainable crops.
