In pursuit of raising awareness for sustainable urbanization, convened by the UN-Habitat, the tenth session of the World Urban Forum 2020 was held in Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre from the 8th to the 13th of February 2020.

The Forum’s main focus is to promote collaboration and cooperation through an open and inclusive debate, exchange of knowledge and sharing of lessons between stakeholders, constituencies and the general public, on sustainable urban development.

In 2001, United Nations established The World Urban Forum (WUF) in pursuit of addressing one of the most crucial issues in the world today: urbanization and its effect on communities, cities, economies, climate change and policies. UN-Habitat assembled the World Urban Forum to serve as an open and inclusive platform for addressing the issues and challenges of sustainable urbanization.

The theme of the 10th session of the World Urban Forum 2020 is Cities of Opportunities: Connecting Culture and Innovation focused on making use of culture and innovation as the driving force towards sustainable urban development.

Opening the session and welcoming the participants to Abu Dhabi, Mohamed Al Khadar Al Ahmed, Abu Dhabi Department of Municipal Affairs and Transport, encouraged all the participants to engage in an exchange of knowledge and experiences throughout the entire forum.

Some of the highlights are speeches from influential speakers like Leah Namugerwa, Fridays for Future and Urban Youth Assembly representative. Namugerwa puts focus on implementing some necessary steps to fight climate change. She also remarks on the representation of children and youth in decision making. Furthermore, Violet Shivutse, Huairou Commission and Women’s Assembly representative, who has been chosen for monitoring the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the New Urban Agenda (NUA).
