Dubai is a city that never ceases to amaze. In addition to having launched Smart programs such as the Smart Dubai Project 2021, there are other internationally renowned projects, including the Sustainable City of Dubai. In a nutshell, this is a city designed to be zero-emission, with lots of solutions for well-being and respect for our precious planet.

What is a sustainable city?

According to the definition of the ITU (International Telecommunication Union), a Sustainable City is a city in which cutting-edge systems and technologies are used to make life better, both in terms of energy waste and connectivity. In particular, ICT (information and communication) systems are used to meet all kinds of individual needs.

This makes it possible not only for modern generations, but also for future ones, to improve sectors such as the environment, the economy and socialization, bringing the quality of life to a much higher level.

In this regard, Dubai developed a real city within itself where all this has become reality.

What does the Sustainable City of Dubai have to offer?

What distinguishes the Sustainable City of Dubai is the strategy behind it. This is based on a logic which aims to improve the environment, respecting it in all its forms, and the economy, increasing the possibilities for work and investment in new technologies.

In addition, social life has been radically changed, making available to its ”inhabitants” solutions that promote well-being and health.

There are, in fact, several programs and events aimed at eco-sustainability, such as strategic partnerships and a whole series of business plans that want to decrease the waste of resources by promoting green and intelligent solutions.

As stated on the official website, “as the first operational Net Zero Energy city in Dubai, The Sustainable City is modelled to become an international showcase for sustainable living, work, education, and recreation”.

Not surprisingly, the success achieved by this project is envied by other nations around the world.

But let’s take a look at what’s inside this almost utopian city.

Buffer zone

The perimeters and boundaries of the city have been designed to offer a sort of anti-bodies against everything that could pollute it. To this end, 2500 trees have been planted evenly distributed, so as to purify the air and, at the same time, offer many green areas to those who circulate within it.

Residential Clusters

The Sustainable City of Dubai offers as many as 500 villas that are divided, in turn, into 5 different residential neighborhoods. Each of these is connected to an urban farm, while the clusters are composed of 90 Courtyard Villas, 8 Garden Villas and 2 Signature Villas.

Farms

Along the whole length of the city there are the so-called farms, that is greenhouses of more than 3000 square meters dedicated to agriculture. The cultivations, however, take place inside domes where mainly fruits and vegetables are planted. This contributes not only to the food needs of citizens, but also to less food waste.

There is also a sustainable square, full of cafes and restaurants, as well as a parking lot specifically created with solar panels, in order to optimize energy consumption by exploiting sunlight. There is also an institute which produces most of the energy for the city, inside which there is an amphitheater which can accommodate as many as 700 people.

Completing the sustainable city of Dubai are a totally green international school, a village offering a comprehensive and integrated approach towards Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD), and a low-consumption mosque with LED lights and high-efficiency air conditioning systems.

In short, Dubai can undoubtedly be defined as the most sustainable city in the world, despite one might think otherwise.
