The government of Dubai has plenty of plans in store for the future of the city, which aims to be one of the best in the world. Among the various projects launched, there is one which is about to reach its goal: make the city completely paperless.
The deadline is set for 12/12/2021, the day from which citizens will be able to carry out any type of process from their smartphones.
What is Dubai Paperless Strategy?
The Dubai Paperless Strategy, similarly to The Sustainable City of Dubai, is part of a government project that aims to eliminate the excessive use of paper in the city, to protect the planet.
As stated by His Highness Sheikh Hamdan Bin Mohammed Al Maktoum during Digital Dubai’s Future Now Event on April 16, 2017, “the Dubai government will issue its last paper transaction in 2021.”
Specifically, the strategy will cover all government processes that, until now, had to be performed physically. Such procedures, now outdated by several countries, do nothing but slow down the efficiency of customer service, while increasing paper waste at the same time.
So, what better city than Dubai to make all government processes digitized? In addition, a legal framework has been created to address digital procedures and allow any individual citizen to do transactions quickly, even if they are not familiar with Dubai’s culture or language.
On October 18, 2021, the city has achieved over 98% of its mission, going to complete it on 12/12/2021.
Who is taking part in this strategy?
It is worth noting that a total of 43 government entities in Dubai have participated in this strategy, digitizing every single internal and external process. In this way, Dubai will soon be the digital capital of the world, as the government has stated several times over the years.
Participants also pointed out that more than 331 million sheets of paper were saved through this approach, reducing the time spent on each operation as well. In smaller numbers, 331 million sheets equal more than 39,000 trees.
Thus, people are happier for consuming less time at the customer service desk, while planet Heart thanks us. In addition, the government has saved AED 1.3 billion and 14 million man-hours, growing the economy exponentially.
“With its successive achievements, the Dubai Government is on the right track to fulfill its aspirations and lead the world in the field of digital governments, all while continuing to prioritize customers’ happiness and offering them seamless and proactive services”, said H.E. Hamad Al-Mansoori.
The tool which will help Dubai city in reducing paper sheets everywhere is DubaiNow. It is a simple-but-efficient app for any city service people might need, being them Dubai citizens or not. More than 120 government and private sector can be accessed, with a range of 30 entities to choose from.

Dubai Paperless Strategy represents one of the most ambitious projects in the world, involving private and public sector to reach one goal: save our planet by reducing costs and optimizing time consumption.
